We offer Respite Care to allow carers and their families to take a break. Respite Care means the person that requires care is looked after by someone else for a short period.
Respite provides the opportunity for an individual and their family and/or carers to have a break. It lets the carer take time out to look after themselves and helps stop them becoming exhausted and run down.
In the 2011 census there were around 5.4 million people in England who provide unpaid care for a friend or family member. Caring means something different for everyone – but one thing that carers say is that they cannot keep going without a break.
Respite is shown to help sustain family carer’s health and wellbeing, avoid or delay out-of-home residential placements and reduce the likelihood of abuse and neglect to the service user.
We have three Respite Centres across Cornwall:
All of the Centres are registered with CQC and have a Registered Manager overseeing the day-to-day operations along with a Deputy Team Leader and oversight by an Area Manager.
Our Centres are for adults aged 18 and over who have a learning disability, physical disabilities and other complex needs and who have eligible needs under The Care Act 2014 and have had an assessment from Adult Care or Health Worker.
The Respite Centres are open 7 days a week 24/7, with day support available 7 days a week.
Before an offer of respite care can be made, a Mosaic assessment and support plan must be provided by an Adult Care or Health Worker, along with a completed referral form. We will also have a verbal conversation about the prospective new Service User and their needs.
This also includes any Continuing Health Funded Service Users – all referrals to Respite Services have to initially come through Adult Care and Support; we are unable to accept direct referrals at this time.
If we are able to support the individual, we will then make arrangements to introduce them and their family or carers to the service through a phased approach. For example a visit to view the service, a stay for tea or a social event followed by building up to an overnight experience to a planned longer stay.
It is vital that we have as much information and detail around the support needs, wishes, individual choices and preferences as possible from the outset. This helps us to determine our ability to meet these requirements or not.
